Novella G. Gumbs, was born in Greenville, North Carolina to Johnnie and Dora House Greene (deceased). She attended Simpson Elementary School, and Pitt County Training School in Grimesland, North Carolina. The first sibling to earn a college degree, she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics; and graduated from Shaw University, Raleigh, NC in May 1958.

Novella moved to New York after graduation, gained employment at Sea View Hospital as a Dietitian and promoted to Assistant Director. She retired on November 17,1994 after 36 years of service. She was married to James Gumbs on November 6, 1976.

She credited her quest for knowledge and work ethic to her parents who were industrious and enterprising. Novella was a seamstress, praiser, generous giver, good listener, and exhorter. Loving her family and others she demonstrated
Christ-like qualities.

At an early age she accepted Christ as her personal Savior, active in Sunday School and all church activities. Therefore, continuing her spiritual development, she joined Fellowship Baptist Church, Staten Island, New York. She was a Mother.

Novella was lifetime members of the NAACP and National Council of Negro Women and was presented an “Unsung Heroes Award.”  She was one of the founding members of the Harriet Tubman Purple Hat Society, Inc., Staten Island, NY.

Novella is preceded in death by her parents, Sisters: Doris Adams, Dennie Jones, Janie Greene, Leona Richards, Brothers: Donald Greene, Willie Greene, Wilbert Greene, and Stanely Greene, and Spouse.

Samuel Whitfield (brother in Christ), Staten Island, NY; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
