Leo D. Johnson

Leo D. Johnson was born February 1, 1932 to Leo and Hattie
Starks Johnson in Durham, North Carolina. He departed this
life on April 13, 2020. As a child he was very active in church
work. He was a member of Boy Scout Troop 55 and became
one of the first Eagle Scouts among African American teens in
Durham, North Carolina.
Upon completion of high school in 1949, he attended Talladega
College in Talledega, Alabama. After completing his
sophomore year, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1951. He
went to Aviation Cadet School and upon completion, he was
appointed Second Lieutenant. Flight duties were on SAC,
combat ready B-47 crew. He completed his military obligations
in 1957 after spending 6 years on active duty.
A job opportunity brought him to New York where he enrolled
in CCNY, met his wife Sylvia and completed his education. He
married in 1960 and had two daughters, Karen and Andrea.
His Masonic career began in 1974. He became a member of
Widow Sons’ Lodge No. 11 and served as Master in 1981. He
also became a member of the Long Island Consistory No. 61 in
1975, created in Abu Bekr Temple No. 91 in 1976 and became a
33 degree mason in May 2006.
He worked for Nuclear Data, a nuclear engineering firm for
over 20 years. He retired as Senior Field Service Engineer in
1994.
Leo was very active in the building where he lived. He served
on the Board of Directors for 10 years.

During his second to last year alive, he made his faith
confession for Christ as Savior. He would proudly state that he
prayed daily to God for his entire family calling their names
out one by one before going to sleep.
He leaves to mourn his wife Sylvia, daughters Karen Johnson,
husband Bruce Johnson, Andrea Nation, husband Peter
Nation, seven grandchildren, Taylor, Hunter, Faith, Hope,
Grace, Joshua and Caleb and a host of cousins and friends.
