In the memory of Elmore John Gray Jr., affectionately known as “Elmo” so that together we may acknowledge and share both our joy in the gift that his life was to us, and the pain that his passing brings. In sharing the joy and the pain together today, may we lessen the pain and remember more clearly the joy.
Elmore was just 54 years old when he passed away on Friday, October 21, 2022, at Richmond University Hospital. He was born on November 13, 1967, in New York to Elmore Gray Sr. and Susie Jones. Elmore spent his life in New York.
Elmore was very close to his family, his friends, and his beloved partner Tara Gray. Growing up with Elmore wasn’t always easy for us. He would pick on us constantly, but let anyone else even look at us funny, and Elmore would be on our side. Elmore worked hard, but he also enjoyed his life. He loved to tell jokes and he was mister fix it. Elmore was extremely handy, and we all benefitted from his amazing ability as a general contractor.
Many of you will recall Elmore’s huge smile and laugh. Elmore didn’t have a mean bone in his body. He was a warm friendly man who made his mark in the world not with grand gestures or fancy titles, but by the basic goodness and generosity of his character.
Elmore is proceeded in death by his Father Elmore John Gray Sr. and his nephew Alfread Tobe Jr. Elmore’s Mother Susie Jones survives him as well as life partner Tara Gray and his siblings Michael Thomas, Elsie Pettaway, Alfread Tobe, David Tobe, Christine West, Kathy Smith, and Sherry Louis.
