Darryl "Smitty" Smith

Darryl Smith Obituary

Darryl Smith, affectionately known as “SMITTY”, was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 12, 1962 to (the late) Helen Smith and Marion “Charles” Smith.  Darryl attended John Jay High School.  Upon high school graduation he enlisted into the United States Army in 1981, where he also served in the Gulf War for three years.  He then was stationed in Honolulu Hawaii at Schofield Barracks, where he met and married (the late) Melissann Cambra.  Within that union they had two children, Daniqua and Darryl.

            Later he got stationed in Killeen, Texas where he joined the Prince Hall Masons.  While in Killeen he was also Honorable discharged from the army in 1991.  Soon after he moved his family to Sumter, South Carolina where he served as a correctional officer for a few years.

            He returned to Brooklyn, New York in 1993, where he joined the United States Postal Service for a short time.  After he departed the union with Melissaann, he then met Danielle Burnett, where they had two children, Demarre and Dallin.  He then rejoiced the Brooklyn Prince Hall Masons with Widow Sons Lodge #11.  Also joining the ABU-BEKR temple #91 clown unit where he was known as “HAPPY”.

            In 2000 he married Teresa Whitaker, from that union they had a son Tequan.  During this time he joined the New York Police Department in 2003.  While still active with the Prince Hall Masons and School safety division with NYPD.

            After departing the union from Teresa.  Later he married Lisa Dobie Knight (Smith).  From this union also came a stepson Jerrell Knight, who follows in the footsteps of his stepfather as a Prince Hall Mason.

            Upon his untimely death Darryl was a retired officer with NYPD (r2018) and still very active with the Prince Hall Masons.  On April 25, 2020 the lord called Darryl Smith home.

            Leaving behind to cherish his memory his Devoted Wife Lisa Dobie Knight Smith, his one and only daughter Daniqua Smith, four sons, Darryl Smith (Geraldine Smith), Demarre Smith, Dallin Smith and Tequan Smith.  A step-son, Jerrell Knight, his father Marion “Charles” Smith, two sisters, Vanessa “Ann” Barbra (William Barbra), Angela “Niecey” Smith-Ramos (Anthony Ramos), I Brother:  Charlie Smith, two grandsons Levonte Smith and Hunthen Smith, two nephews:  Cameron Ramos and Justin Ramos, a mother-in-law:  Jimmy Dobie, a brother in-law:  Erick Dobie, a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.  Darryl will be truly missed by all of us.

            In grateful appreciation the family of Darryl Smith gratefully acknowledge the many kind and beautiful expressions of sympathy and love shown during their time of bereavement.
