Aurita Rosa Waterman (nee Baptiste) of Staten Island, New York passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, January 8th, 2023, after a lengthy illness.
Born on July 16th, 1933 in Barbados, West Indies, she was the daughter of Rev. Arnold Browne and Leila Browne.
Aurita arrived in the United States in 1956 where she met and married the late Dudley
. Waterman Jr. She migrated permanently to the United States in 1960.
While raising two children, Aurita returned to college where she obtained BSN and MSA degrees in Nursing.
Aurita worked in various New York hospitals until settling at Veterans Administration Hospital in Brooklyn, NY in 1975 where she had an exemplary career for 31 years as an R.N. and Nurse Recruiter, receiving numerous accolades and commendations.
A devoted Christian, Aurita was a long-time member of the International Christian Center of Staten Island, where she was a member of the choir.
Aurita loved to travel and would always look for different places to experience. She was also an expert cook. Many times, friends would find a way to her house at dinner time just to sample "Mrs. Waterman's" cooking.
Giving back to the community was very important to Aurita. She was a mentor to many young women in Stapleton, where she was the leader in the Salvation Army's Girl Guards.
Aurita is survived by her daughter Janice Waterman, her son Dudley Waterman 111, his wife Connie and grandchildren Edward, Christina and Michael. She is predeceased by her brothers Austin Baptiste and James Baptiste.
