Lillian A. Sarjeant (nee Jones), daughter of the late Clarence L. Jones and Eugenia M. Jones, and sister to the late Clarence C. Jones, Russell F. Jones, Charles W. Jones and Eugene P. Jones, was born on May 25, 1920, in Staten Island, New York.
Lillian married the late James A. Sarjeant in 1938. During their courtship, Lillian loved riding with James on the back of his motorcycle. From this union came five children. Lillian and James later adopted Darrell Sarjeant. Lillian was predeceased by her three oldest children: Shirley, Charles and James R. She is survived by her three youngest children: Lawrence, Robert and Darrell.
Lillian lived her entire life on Staten Island. She was born and raised in Stapleton. Lillian was an outstanding student and graduated from Curtis High School. After her marriage to James, she lived in Sandy Ground (Rossville), among family and friends, until early 2018. She was known and respected by many on both the north and south shores of Staten Island. “Miss Lil” loved the Sandy Ground community, and members of the Sandy Ground community, both individually and through the outreach of the Rossville AME Zion Church, demonstrated their love for her in countless ways over the years, especially during the last years of her life.
Lillian was a homemaker and devoted her life to her family and serving God. She accepted Christ as her Lord and savior at a young age. During her youth, she attended Stapleton UAME Church. As an adult, she became a faithful member of the Pentecostal Faith Church of God, originally pastored by her father-in-law, the late Bishop James O. Sarjeant, where she remained a member until her passing. When she was no longer physically able to attend “105 Brook Street” Brook Street came to her. Pastor Landry, Sister Josey and the Brook Street congregation were a constant presence and source of comfort while Lillian was shut-in. Lillian held fast to her belief in God and God’s infinite wisdom until she died.
In addition to Lawrence (Karen), Robert (Eileen) and Darrell, Lillian leaves nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins to cherish her memory.
