Ida Ruth Stewart, a lifelong Staten Islander, was born November 10th 1927. The fourth child of the late Mr. & Mrs. Leslie and Australia Stewart Sr., departed this life on June 6th 2018 after a brief illness.
Born and raised in New Brighton, Ruthie, as she was known by friends and family, attended PS 16 and Curtis High School. After high school, she secured employment at Willowbrook State School where she worked her way up to Building Supervisor. Ruthie received an award in 1985 from the then Governor Mario Cuomo, for Outstanding Employee of the Year. She retired in the late 1980’s with over 40 years of Service.
Ruthie was an avid traveler, loved to dance and enjoyed listening to Jazz. She was a dedicated and longstanding member of Shiloh A.M.E. Zion Church in West Brighton.
She was preceded in death by her parents Leslie and Australia Stewart and her siblings; Thelma B. Giddens, Ralph T. Stewart, Shirley A. Dixon, Philip M. Stewart and Leslie W. Stewart, Jr. She is survived by a sister-in-law Cleo Stewart of Staten Island and host of nieces, nephews and friends.
