Floyd McCoy, Sr.

Floyd McCoy Sr. a Staten Island Native was born December 24, 1934 at St. Vincent Hospital in Staten Island , NY to the late Rev. Mack and Missionary Margaret McCoy , he was the second of 8 children. Sadly at the age of 84 Floyd departed this world peacefully in his sleep June 16, 2019 at the Golden Gate Nursing Home in Staten Island. He was best known to family and friends as CHAMP. As a young boy Floyd was a student at P.S.18, then move on to attend and graduate from Curtis High School. Early in his life he dreamed that one day he’ll become a professional prize fighter, shortly after At the age of 19 his dream came true and he began his boxing career at the West Brighten P.A.L, were he trained and mentored young people; from 1957 to 1964. During his time boxing, he traveled to Rome, Italy, Canada, Spain, Miami, New York City at Madison Square Garden, and many more places, In Fact the biggest fight was Gino Rinala from Italy, which lead him a Championship for the light-heavyweight division, ranking NO .1, in the World of Boxing for a year. In addition to that; he also won the Golden Gloves in the Medium-Weight division. But even with great success Floyd continued fighting as a professional fighter in the Light- Heavyweight division until he had to stop fighting due to a work related injury.

          After Floyd finished his boxing career and made history representing Staten Island, he decided to work at the West Brighten Foundry in Staten Island, as a welder making military weapons and supplies, then he worked as a safety officer at Willowbrook State School where he allowed his children to sing to the residents, until it shut down in 1987. He also went on to work at the Institute of Basic Research (IBR) until he retired after over 40 years of service. Be that as it may Floyd was also a caregiver of Vicky and the late Mary, along with other children and adult who needed him. During Floyd’s free time he would go fishing with friends, listen to music like Fat Domino, read, travel with his wife and family, cook, trained constantly, play checkers and entertain family, friends, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. One of his joy was hearing his wife and children sing.

          Later on in Floyd life he married his longtime friend Amelia C. (Glover) McCoy and in that union were 7 children. In their union they were faithful member of Halls Temple Reform Church Of God and Christ, and Fellowship Baptist Church. With this in mind in his last days he touch the heart of those at the Golden Gate Nursing Home, and his hometown store he went to often.

Floyd McCoy SR. leaves behind his Wife Amelia C. McCoy of 64 years, 6 of his 7 children; Floyd Jr, Reginald, Frank, Henry, Jeffery, Lucky number 7 Margaret, and proceeded by the late William McCoy Sr, 27 grandchildren,63 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild on the way, his only living sibling Mack McCoy, Sister-in-laws Marie McCoy, Marie Glover, Ida Glover, and Thelma Yarbrough, Brother-in-laws William and Theodore Glover, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He will forever be remembered for his bright smile, his boxing pose, being a pace-maker, heartfelt handshake, his caring gentle giant, and his saying “I may laugh and joke, but I don’t miss a stroke”, “baby come and baby go that all I know’’, “I don’t raze much sand, because I’m a traveling man”, “McCoy, McCoy he’s nothing but a baby boy”.  “McCoy is my name, Fighting is my game”, “I’ll see you in the ring”. And his most famous saying “I’m no toy I’m the real McCoy”. We all love you Floyd but god love you most, Rest safe in his care.
