On Tuesday, August 17, 2021, Yvette Marie Vilar Gilmore, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend transitioned over at the age of 64.

Yvette was born on October 18, 1956 to Josefina and Pedro Vilar. Yvette was raised in the lower east side of Manhattan. She was the youngest of 7 brothers and sisters ; Frida Alcaide, Norma Alcaide , Omar Vilar, Nadia Vilar – Colbert, Peter Vilar and Frankie Vilar. Yvette spent her childhood between the lower East side, Puerto Rico, Kingston, NY, and Staten Island.  Yvette attended elementary School in Staten Island before relocating to Puerto Rico, then attended IS 27, Anning S. Prall Intermediate School, it was there that she would meet lifelong friends who would become family.

 At the age of 18, Yvette had her first child, Douglas Van Dyke, also known as DJ. In the late 70’s Yvette would relocate from Kingston to Staten Island, moving into her very first apartment. During this time she would go on to work for Proctor and Gamble for several years.  Yvette would later complete her GED and obtain an EKG technician certification. Several years later at the age of 29, she would have her second child Paysha Best, a baby girl.  Yvette was a loving mother, deeply devoted to her two children, working three jobs to provide for them. In the early 90’s Yvette worked at South Beach Psych as well as a girl’s group home for at risk youth, touching many lives during her time there.

In 1998 Yvette would meet Islam Michael Gilmore, the two would move to New Castle, Delaware in 2004 buying their first home. Marrying soon after on August 3, 2008 in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The two were inseparable. Islam expressing that they were soulmates, creating heaven on earth for each other- “(Yvette) was my peace and blessings of Allah”.

Yvette had an affinity for caring for others, especially children, she later in life received a certification in early childhood education. She would work as a child care provider at Bright Horizons, an early education and preschool center for many years. In 2014 Yvette became a business owner, opening “Love Bug Day Care” providing high quality child care for local families. Yvette loved children and cared for them fervently with joy and compassion, becoming an influential part of many lives.

 Yvette’s friends remember her as a firecracker, unafraid of any challenge.  Yvette vacationed frequently, visiting family and friends often. She was an avid fan of 80’s R&B, she loved listening and dancing to the sounds of artist such as The Whispers, Blue Magic, Marvin Gaye and many more. Being around her children and grandchildren brought her great joy.  Yvette loved to collect elephant figurines of all shapes and sizes as a symbol of luck and wisdom. Yvette and her husband, Islam loved to entertain and would host an annual 4th of July barbecue, looked forward to by many, bringing together family and friends new and old.  Yvette is remembered by her family and friends as a warm soul that provided unconditional love to those she held dear, she was nonjudgmental and made you feel loved.

Yvette is survived by her sisters Norma Alcaide and Nadia Vilar-Colbert, her husband Islam Michael Gilmore, son Douglas Van Dyke, daughter Paysha Best, and 5 grandchildren Cheyenne Van Dyke, Nyla Van Dyke, D’mani Vilar, Alaya Van Dyke and La’mir Vilar, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and sister-friends.
