Tyrone’s Obituary

Tyrone Johnson was born on August 7th, 1961 in Newark, New Jersey to the late Nathaniel Newton Johnson Sr and Catherine Johnson. He departed from this earth on December 13th, 2020 at Richmond University Medical Center. Tyrone graduated from East New York Technical and Vocational High School in Brooklyn, New York in 1980. From there he attended Kingsborough Community College.

Tyrone went on to have several jobs over the years, but the one he worked for the last 14 years was as a Dock Supervisor at Brookfield Properties located in the New York Times building. Tyrone developed a number of relationships throughout his tenure and many became close associates who he spent time with outside of work.

Anyone who knew Tyrone realized he was a sports fanatic. What he played better than most was softball- his first love. He played on several teams beginning in Junior High school where starred and took the MVP for the one season he played. Then came the Brownsville Sluggers where he became the power of the team. He also played for Brown Sugar and Reckless and the team helped start Lethal Weapon. His most proud moment came when he was playing for Carib-which came in second place in the Nationals. Tyrone also loved football and was a founding member of the HOMEBOYS organization. As the quarterback of the team, He led them to several championships.

Tyrone is preceded by his parents, and one brother, Nathaniel Newton Johnson Jr. He leaves to mourn, two sisters Gloria Byrd of Richmond, Virginia, and Angela Chew of Dale City, Virginia. Also four brothers; Michael Chewning (Cheryl) of Peekskill, NY; Anthony Chewning (Eddy) of Wilmington, Delaware; Clarence Johnson (Elise) of Lawrenceville, Georgia; Lydon B. Johnson (Carmen) of Staten Island NY; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, family and friends.
