Roy Edrick Grant was born on January 8, 1932, in Trujillo, Honduras, the mainland, and raised in the town of Coxenhole, on the island of Roatan, Honduras.
He completed his formal education in Honduras. He migrated to the United States as a young lad, and later settled in Staten Island, NY. In his quest for knowledge, he enrolled in then called, Richmond Community College, now known as the College of Staten Island, and completed courses.
Upon being drafted, he entered the United States Army in 1958 and served until 1962, receiving an honorable discharge. He completed basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and his medical training at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonia, Texas. He was a medic and NCO of the United States Army. Upon his discharge, he worked as a carpenter until his medical retirement in 1980 due to visual impairment. He enjoyed carpentry and kept the neighborhood nourished with healthy food from his health food store, Landa’s Health Foods, short for Yolanda, his first wife’s middle name, with whom he was wed for thirty one years..
At a tender age, Roy was baptized at the Coxenhole Seventh-day Adventist Church in Roatan. It was in Roatan that he discovered the beauty of God's creation and God's sovereignty over everyday life. He was a man of great faith. He was actively engaged in the various ministries of the church, which expanded when he arrived to the United States. He was a charter member of the Prophetic Voice SDA Mission, now known as the Staten Island Seventh-day Adventist Church. As he continued on his spiritual journey, his ministry expanded. He served the church in various capacities as: Missionary Volunteer / AY Leader, Deacon, Usher, Treasurer, Prayer Ministry Leader, Stewardship Director, Education Director, Sabbath School Teacher, Personal Ministry Director, Prison Ministry Director, Church Chorister, Nursing Home Ministry Leader and Elder. In August 2015, he joined the fellowship at NBC SDA Church, where he resolved to remain active in ministry.
He aspired to be a Pastor, which led to his completion of the chaplaincy certificate program. His faith in God carried him through various health challenges which he faced with courage and patience. He was deeply respected for his joy and humility. Despite his physical limitations, he was always concerned about uplifting others. Roy never complained, but persevered a life with gusto. His caring heart and passion for God were unmistakable. He walked with the Lord and invited others along on the journey. He was a core team member in establishing the Heart Beat Fellowship SDA Mission, now New Brighton Community SDA Church..
He was a truly blessed man and a blessing to others! In 1976, he was nominated, “Staten Island SDA Church, Father of the Year." He built positive relationships with the church youths and will be fondly remembered for his weekly adventures when he would pile the young people in his family station wagon to explore various community events for them to participate in.
He enjoyed playing the guitar and harmonica, however, Dominoes was his game of passion. He was a competitive domino player despite his blindness. If he won the game, he'd asked, "how does it feel to be beaten by a blind man? When he did not win, he would ask, how do you feel taking advantage of a blind man?" He was an extraordinary cook.
In June 2012, he was introduced to the lovely Violet Coleman, by his stepmother, and on August 19, of that year they were married. Roy and Violet have blended their seven children into a big family unit. Roy often expressed his gratitude for this occasion. He was gifted with his beloved Violet, who lovingly cared for him.
He worked diligently to take care of his family. He also had various other endeavors; an apartment complex, and a few small businesses to help give young people employment. During his trials and tribulations, he thought of others. He truly lived a fulfilled life. He often said that God had given him so many good days and blessings.
Roy took great pride in his Honduran heritage, was quick with a witty comment, and didn't know a stranger. He devoted many years of his life as a Chaplain Assistant at the Arthur Kill Correctional Facility. He was disheartened when the ministry ended with its closure.
On Thursday, March 16, 2023, the curtains came down on a life well-lived. After a prolonged illness, Roy Edrick Grant ended his earthly journey at Staten Island University Hospital surrounded by his beloved wife, son, Edrick, daughter-in-law Lois and nieces, Hope and Jessica, with the blessed hope that he will see his Redeemer in the first resurrection.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Cora Grant (mother of Stanley, Edrick, Clifford and Stanley Grant), second wife, Joan Grant, sister, Doris Woods; brother, Haldine Grant (Junior).
He leaves to mourn his passing, a loving and devoted wife, Violet Grant; sons, Stanley (Irene) Grant, Edrick (Lois) Grant, Clifford (Marleny) Grant, Stanley Mitchell, Jed Coleman, Jacob Coleman; daughter, Dr. Jaylene Coleman; 13 grandchildren and 7 greatgrandchildren; brother, Carlton Woods; sister, Melida Blackwell; multiple nieces, nephews, cousins, dearest childhood friend, Rosswell Allen, the Staten Island and NBC SDA Churches, extended family and precious friends.
Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. May his soul rest in peace.
