Nathaniel Hugh Smith, Jr. was born on March 29th, 1963 to Nathaniel Hugh Smith, Sr. and the to the late Joyce Elizabeth Aiken Smith, in Ridgeland South Carolina.
He graduated from Jasper County High School in 1981. Nathaniel completed his Bachelor’s degree at Morehouse College and is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He served his country as a solider in the United States Army, receiving an Honorary Discharge.
After, several years Nathaniel eventually settled in New York City and continue to work as social worker until he no longer could. In sickness and health, Nathaniel exemplified courage, strength, faith and expectations. His unwavering faith in God, is the foundation upon which he built his life.
Unforgettable is who he was, truly touching and changing many people lives by having a generous heart and giving selflessly. If, he had only two dollars in his pocket, and you were a friend or a stranger in need, Nathaniel would give it to you. He took great joy in helping out anyone who needed him.
A devoted member of St. Philips Baptist Church for many years. Nathaniel was a diligent worker, he worked tirelessly in spite of his illness. He was one of the original youth mentors for St. Philips Heat Drumline. He was also instrumental in bringing the Festival to St. Philips’. He was a member of the Men’s Ministry, Hospitality Ministry, Male Chorus, and was an active member of St. Philip’s Food Pantry. Out of all his many accomplishments in life. His crowning moment was being ordained as a Deacon in St. Philips Baptist Church on November 14, 2019, “HALLELUJAH!”
On Sunday, March 6, 2022, Nathaniel entered into everlasting rest. He was preceded in death by his mother: Joyce Elizabeth Aiken Smith and his brother: Christopher B. Smith. He leaves to cherish his memories, father: Nathaniel Hugh Smith, Sr., four sisters: Denise Smith, Sharon Frost, Nicole Smith all of Ridgeland, S.C., and Tonya Askew of Florida, One brother: Kenneth Smith, Ridgeland S.C., One aunt: Gladys Scaife and one uncle, also a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members and friends. Two god-daughters: Zayani Philips and Tranece Philips and his adopted niece Aniya Stokes. Two very special friends: Joseph Rodriguez and Sharon Curry. And a special thanks to Harvey Harmon and the “Pretty Lady” you know who you are.
