Jarrie L. Smith was born in St, George S.C. on September 11,1937, to the late Mose Prince and Lisher Smith-Prince. After a lengthy illness, in the early morning hours of January 13, 2023, in her home in the Mariners Harbor section of Staten Island NY. Jarrie peacefully and quietly took her eternal rest. She was a quiet and humble person who would do whatever she could for anyone. It was always a joy to see her smiling face and hear that laugh of hers. Being one of 6 children, Jarrie received her education in the public school system in St. George SC, graduating from the Williams Memorial High School in May of 1956. Shortly after on December 27, 1957, Jarrie married the love of her life, Joseph Smith Jr. Looking for a better life, they decided to relocate to New York. There they settled and resided in the borough of Queens, where she gave birth and began to raise her 4 loving sons, Eric, Reginald, Joseph, and Craig. They stayed there for a few years, but after securing a new job, Mr. Smith relocated his family to Staten Island. Even after the move on any given morning you could see Jarrie leaving her building to travel back to Queens where she worked as a domestic worker, a position she held for many years. And after a long day of work and traveling (on public transportation), Jarrie would come home, cook (a full meal) and care for her family.

Not long after the passing of her husband, Jarrie made the decision to finally retire. Being a proud and compassionate woman, with a heart of gold, she took pride in everything she did, she may have birthed 4 sons but had a hand in the rearing of many. There weren’t many not welcomed at apartment 3B. Jarrie had no problem offering a word of encouragement, hug, or hot meal, nor a good stern talking to anyone. This was just a piece of why she was loved by so many. The only time you may have had a problem with Jarrie was if you did something to one of her “boys”, she didn’t play about hers’.
Even though Jarrie had no problem having her alone time watching her TV at the kitchen table, she loved talking and laughing with her family. Each one of her grands held a special place in her heart. She will always be remembered as a faithful and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend, who was also blessed to become a great great-grandmother this past year. When not watching her soaps, game and judge shows at the kitchen table, or cooking, Jarrie enjoyed attending Sunday service at the Summerfield Church. She also enjoyed her shopping at Kohl’s, Macy’s, and J.C. Penny’s.
Jarrie leaves to cherish her loving memories 2 sons, Eric (Alvin) Smith of Staten Island NY and Reginald Smith of New Jersey. 10 Grandchildren, 11 great grand-children, 1 great great grand-child, 1 daughter in-law Vinesc Mapp Smith, 3 adopted daughters Sheri Phillips-Barnes, Emily Mitchell, and Celeste Thomas. Her nieces and nephews, along with a host of cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father Mose Prince, mother Lisher Prince, 4
Sisters Sally Hall, Cherry Prince, Burtella Prince, and Burt Prince, as well as 1 brother Buster Prince. Her 6 sisters in-law Amelia Burton, Julia Manning, Robert Senior Jenkins, Marie Lou Jenkins, Lollie Patton, and Annie Rell Smith. Her 4 brothers in-law Virgil, McClinton, Farmer Lee, and Levi Smith. Her husband, of over 40 years, Joseph Smith Jr. and sons Joseph F. Smith and Craig Smith.
