George "Snookie" Rainey

July 5, 1955 ~ January 5, 2021 (age 65)

George S. Rainey, who was better known as Snookie was born July 5th, 1955 at St. Vincent's Hospital. He weighed in at 6.4 lbs and remained a slim guy his whole life. But his slender limbs deceived the weight of Snookie’s spirit. To the children of the family, his tongue had the muscles and authority of any 6 foot 5, 300lb lineman. And to those who knew him outside of the role of father and uncle he was a force of great love, fun, and was always reliable.  Although he was the only boy, Jackie and Carol knew that they couldn't easily steam roll their brother; he was always up for a fight. Even as a youth Snookie’s spirit was large.

Snookie was raised in West Brighton, Staten Island.  Snookie attended Port Richmond High School before attending Job Corp. Some of his favorite pastimes included playing pool, djing, playing Quick Draw, and spending time with his family. George started his life long career as a Mental Hygiene Therapy Aid in 1978 at United Cerebral Palsy. He retired in 2018 after 42 years of service.

In 1975 George was introduced to his future wife Christine Donna “Chrissy” Hope through sister in-law, Shelly and her boyfriend Clifford. From there on, the young couple were inseparable, often enjoying time over their love of music, attending basketball games at Port Richmond High School, date nights at the Paramount Movie Theatre, and love of chinese food. The young couple married and welcomed their first child in 1978, Hassan George Rainey. After Hassan, Snookie and Chrissy welcomed 3 more children: Jevin Unique, Christine Nicole, and Brandan Sadie.

Aside from Snookie’s slim appearance he was a man of few words who spoke with his hands. His skills as a DJ (Ghost Rider)  illustrated the ways he connected with everyone in the room by carefully selecting the right music. His playlist served as the soundtrack of his children’s lives. Brandan, his youngest, has fond memories of playing with her father’s turntables under his close supervision. Nikki honed her singing skills while Snookie played early 90’s R&B records at home. Jevin Rainey found motivation to be the best Quarterback behind the words of the lyrics.  Snookie introduced his eldest son, Hassan, to hip-hop music, which served as the backdrop to many of his formative years. Through the subtle vibrations and carefully curated playlist, George was able to shape the lives and experiences of many other families and friends. These playlist carried him upstate on weekend trips, and were always a large part of family get togethers and cookouts. His music is the soundtrack of a legacy that continues to leave a large impression on the memories of his beloved family.

In the early morning of January 5th, 2021, God granted Snookie with his wings right after the Knicks victory over the Atlanta Hawks. On that early morning Snookie arrived to be in union with his beloved son, Hassan Rainey, his father Doyle Wilson, his grandmother Sadie Rainey along with a host of other close friends and family members.

Although Snookie’s body no longer holds the huge weight of his soul, the mark of his legacy still remains. His story continues in the life of his wife Christine Rainey, Predeceased by eldest son, Hassan Rainey, survived by his children Jevin Rainey (Mamiyu Toma-Rainey),  Nikki Rainey, Brandan Rainey- Franco (Miguel Franco). Grandkids include: Hassan Rainey Jr., Jalen Rainey, Ayanna Rainey, Jayla Rainey, Honor Hassan Rainey. He is also survived by his Mother, Helen Wilson and his sisters Jackie Pena(Domingo Pena), Carol Rainey, Kelly Littman, Alma Ward and brother Ronnie Littman as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and a multitude of friends who will continue to carry on Snookie’s legacy. Snookie’s life held weight, and his departure from this realm will forever have an impression on all of us.

Funeral will only be open (In Person) for close friends and family due to CO-VID restrictions.
