Frances Charles Obituary

Frances Charles, a beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and dedicated professional, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2024, at the age of 64 at Staten Island University Hospital. Frances was born on December 16, 1959, in Staten Island, New York, to the late George Charles and Rosa Charles. She was the cherished fifth child among her eight siblings, growing up in a household filled with love and laughter. Frances's upbringing instilled in her a strong sense of family values and dedication to her community.

With a passion for cooking, Frances pursued her dreams by attending culinary school, where she honed her skills and developed a lifelong love for the culinary arts. However, her true calling came in service to others. For over three decades, Frances served with unwavering commitment as a Youth Corrections Officer with New York State Office of Children and Family Services, and with Children’s Home agency, where she touched the lives of countless individuals with her compassion and dedication to helping to rehabilitate youth. Her colleagues remember her as a pillar of strength and integrity, always ready to lend a helping hand or offer words of encouragement.

In addition to her career with New York State, Frances dedicated nearly a decade of her life as a para-professional with the New York City Department of Education. Her passion for education and her nurturing spirit left an indelible mark on the countless students she supported throughout the years.

Frances had a distinctly infectious laugh that could brighten any room. She had a deep appreciation for good food and good music. Frances loved to offer advice to those who sought her wisdom and guidance, drawing from her wealth of life experiences. Most importantly, Frances had a strong relationship with God, which sustained her throughout the duration of recent health challenges.

Frances was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She cherished spending time with her family, whether it was cooking together, sharing stories, or simply enjoying each other's company. Her warmth and kindness endeared her to all who knew her, and her memory will forever be treasured in the hearts of those she leaves behind.

Predeceased in death by her parents, George and Rosa Charles, and her oldest sister Rita Holiday. She is survived by her children Desmond Damon (Shydae) and Natasha Damon, her grandchildren: Mia, Desmond Jr, Ciete, Christian, and Shylah. Her siblings William (Marguerite), Josephine, Mary, Juliana, Ernest (Debra), George (Rachelle), and Ebony.  Additionally, she is mourned by a host of nieces, nephews, uncles’ cousins, and very dear friends.

Frances's legacy of service, love, and compassion will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have known her. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who were touched by her remarkable spirit.
