Louise Dixon was born in Charleston, SC on October 9, 1927. She was one of two children born to the late James Johnson and Sadie Minnie Haskell. Their mother passed when Louise was 11; She and her brother Melvin, where then raised by Aunts – Lucinda Davis and Elise Lewis. Louise was educated in the public-school system in Charleston.
Louise had four daughters, Sadie Brown, Melvina Jenkins, Nancy Ashon-Poku and Sherry Powell. She married Marion Dixon in 1945. The family moved to New York’s Greenwich Village in 1949. They moved to the Lower East Side in 1957 where they remained for many years. Louise was a Nurse’s Aide for most of her life; in the 1980s she moved to Staten Island to be closer to her daughters and grands where she worked as a private Home Aide.
Louise was known as honest and upfront and she rarely held her tongue. If you put on a few pounds, she would let you know (F.A.T. - Dirty Word) and when you changed your hair or wore a new outfit, she would make sure you knew you were handsome or beautiful. Louise was active all her life – we can all remember when she broke both of her arms at the same time from riding her bicycle along the east river. When music came on, she’d be the first and last person on the dance floor. Louise had an infectious laugh and an absolute love of word searches, and walking - getting her steps in before it was fashionable.
Louise particularly loved her grands; once she travelled all the way to Ghana, West Africa to make sure they got their Christmas gifts from Santa. Louise loved holidays and family get-togethers; any chance to spend time with her family was important to her. She was also a loyal member of Fellowship Baptist Church until her health made regular attendance impossible. She will be missed by all that knew and loved her.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents, her brother and the loving aunts who raised her - Lucinda Davis and Elise Lewis. She leaves behind her husband, Marion; 4 daughters, Melvina Jenkins (Albany, NY), Sadie Brown (Charleston, SC), Nancy Ashon-Poku (Staten Island, NY) and Sherry Powell (Staten Island, NY); 14 grandchildren (Ralph, Cathy, Brian, John, Denise, Robert, PaaKwesi, Naana Esi, Grishae, Anika, Eloise, Raven, Butch and Robert) and 36 great-grands and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
