Melverton Watson known to many as “Duke”, “Mev”, or “Issachar” died unexpectedly at Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island, NY on January 29, 2017 at the age of 63.

Mev is survived by his children: Karen Watson, Adowa Watson, Melvonique Watson-Mitchell, Afua Watson, Melverton Watson Jr. and Daniel Watson, respectively.  He leaves behind his two sisters, Norma Watson-Lewis and Geralda (Jerry) Watson and his brother Raymond Watson. He is also survived by his many grandchildren, his son-in-law, Shawn Mitchell, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, loved ones and friends. Mev is preceded in death by his father George Watson and mother Jeneita Adora McLean.

Mev was born on September 3,1953 in Longwood Clarendon, Jamaica, West Indies to George Watson and Jeneita McLean. He attended Alley Primary School in Clarendon, Jamaica and Brampton Private School in Maypen. Mev left Jamaica, West Indies and moved to the United States in 1971. Mev entered the United States Marine Corps on January 9, 1973.  After moving to the states, Duke worked hard to become an established entrepreneur and businessman who owned several businesses over the course of his lifetime. His children will always remember his continued strength and perseverance.

Mev was an accomplished musician who was skilled at playing the guitar and singing sweet melodies. He was a charismatic soul that never met a stranger. Duke’s presence commanded respect and attention wherever he went and he was the center of attention everywhere he went. Music was Duke’s first love as it always brought a smile to his face, joy to his heart and movement to his feet. Duke was a senior member of The 12 Tribes of Israel where he had a host of lifelong friends.

The viewing is scheduled for February 18, 2017 at 10am. Funeral services will take place immediately thereafter at 12 noon. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mev’s life on this day.

Please consider making a donation to raise much needed funds to cover the funeral expenses.

No donation is too small and your support would be greatly appreciated.
